We are taking a slightly different approach by publishing this documentary. Normally we keep articles short and light on the spirit but this is a must-know-about situation…a ticking time bomb (which has already begun to go off!) for the people and the environment of Rinconada, Peru. The highest civilization in the world at 17,000 feet with 30,000 people is a gold mining town at the base of a pristine glacier. But when hoards of toxic mercury are used to sift through gold and subsequently dumped into the river ABOVE the town serious implications arise. Today, there are only about 3,200 tigers left in the wild. However, a century ago, there were around 100,000 tigers. The increases in poaching and habitat loss over that past hundred years have drastically decreased the quantity of wild tigers. On November 21st through the 24th, the Russian Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, hosted the International Tiger Conservation Forum in order to try to increase tiger populations before they become extinct. Polar bears: the largest land carnivores…are considered marine mammals because of their feeding habits. They wait by breathing holes in the ice and strike when an unsuspecting seal or whale comes up for air. However, because of global climate change and the melting of polar ice caps, polar bears are being driven towards land in order to safely find some food, but according to recent studies, polar bears might be yet again driven out of land because of some unfair competition with grizzly bears, who are also being driven out of their normal habitat because of global climate change. Recycling programs have been largely implemented into society on land throughout our country and now the time has come in incorporate them into air travel as well. A report released in February 2010 by A Green America highlights the lack of recycling programs within airline industries. As of February 2010 no major airlines recycled any of the major recyclables including aluminum cans, glass, paper and plastic and no major airline company had a comprehensive program for minimizing onboard waste, which I find completely ridiculous!
