In a world of increasing gasoline prices, people are wanting to hear when their fuel costs will begin to go down.  Recently, I read a book by Jeff Rubin, who has been a chief economist at the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC) for over 20 years.  The book is entitled Why Your World Is About To Get A Whole Lot Smaller: Oil And The End Of Globalization and takes a very interesting approach on voicing environmental conservation.  The reason I wanted to talk about this book is to write about of the topics that Rubin discussed called “The Efficiency Paradox”, which discusses the flaws in our energy efficiency. Happy Earth Day 2011 everyone!  Earth Day is the designated day of the year to take a step back and appreciate the environment and all that it does for us.  Unfortunately, between global climate change and mismanagement of natural resources, the environment is not as healthy as it could be.  Days like Earth Day remind us of what we should be directing our focus towards.  However, I feel that many people do not know the full history of how Earth Day came into fruition. In a world of increasing oil prices, one would think that alternative energy would be on the mind.  Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case for oil companies.  What am I talking about you may ask?  I am referring to what is now being called the “Keystone Pipeline Project”.  This highly controversial project is proposing to build a 1,661-mile (2,671-kilometer) oil pipeline from Alberta, Canada all the way down to Nederland, Texas. Happy Earth Hour everyone!  Earth Hour has become an annual tradition that originated in Sydney, Australia in 2007.  The original concept was developed in order to help bring awareness to climate change, but has grown into a worldwide phenomenon.  The holiday is nothing more than shutting off all your lights for one hour.  Fairly simple, right?  That is probably the reason why so many countries are now participating in this event.  The 2011 Earth Hour takes place today, March 26th, at 8:30PM-9:30PM (your local time). Who doesn’t love a good trip to the theatre?  I recently came across a document that outlined a different kind of educational form of theatre called “Green Drama”.  The program is a training course that is intended to educate people about how to make positive environmental choices.  Their concept is fairly simple:

Environmental Education + Drama = Green Drama Read more…

Are you against whaling?  If so, then you will be happy to hear that anti-whaling activists are putting up a real fight over in Japan.  Recently, the Japanese ended its whaling season early, bringing all of the ships back to port due to “harassment” from environmental activists, such as Sea Shepherd.  Since Japan fisheries could no longer ensure the safety of the whalers, they were forced to end the season early.  Although the whaling has only ended for the season, this is a huge step in whale protection because it shows that activists are making whaling very difficult for places like Japan. As many people have come to realize, worldwide climate is beginning to shift.  As a result, many countries are beginning to take steps towards ensuring the protection of things such as roads, railways, animals, and lighthouses.  The Department for Environmental Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in England has recently outlined their ideas for protection of their infrastructure for how they plan to deal with the problem.  There is national concern in England because the latest predictions state that southern England will be about 2.2-2.6 °C warmer by the 2080s. When it comes to buying a new car, many people have begun making the positive switch over to hybrids, or even fully electric cars!  It is amazing to see what technology has allowed us to accomplish in our everyday tasks, such as driving.  Every year, cars are becoming more fuel-efficient and are even emitting smaller amounts of exhaust.  Luckily, the technology keeps on rolling as more and more companies are trying to come up with the best ideas.  One of the newest ideas has to do with a minivan that does not use batteries or electric motors! Have you ever noticed how big the video game industry has become?  There now seems to be a type of game for every singe genre and age level.  From teenagers playing Halo to senior citizens playing Wii Sports, video games have definitely made their presence known.  However, as I recently took a look at the video games that I personally own, I stopped and wondered if the video game industry was taking any steps to becoming more sustainable.  To my surprise, it has! Have you thought of your New Year’s resolution yet?  Well, let me suggest adding a very simple resolution that will have a positive impact in the world.  This resolution is as simple as reading a book.  Many people love learning about how their actions can specifically impact the world by seeing statistics and learning facts.  However, it is very hard to find sources that are reliable.  My New Year’s resolution suggestions are to read The Green Book and The Lorax.
