So Much Stuff!!
“This is a story about a world obsessed with stuff. It’s a story about a system in crisis. We’re trashing the planet, we’re trashing each other, and we’re not even having fun. The good thing is that when we start to understand the system, we start to see lots of places to step in and turn these problems into solutions.” These are the opening lines to Annie Leanord’s online films, which are all a part of her Story Of Stuff Project.
The Story of Stuff Project is an offshoot of Leonard’s widely viewed online short film called “The Story Of Stuff,” which was released in December 2007 and has over 12-million online views. The film centers on the stages of our materials economy: extraction, production, distribution, consumption, and disposal. All of these stages has a significant impact on our health and the health of the environment.
Leonard, the director of The Story of Stuff Project, is inspired to raising awareness about and transforming our materials economy. She has spent almost twenty years looking into environmental health and justice issues, traveling to over 40 countries and witnessing first-hand the impacts of our way of life on certain parts of the world. Prior to “The Story of Stuff,” Leonard has worked with organizations such as Greenpeace International, GAIA (Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives), and Health Care Without Harm.
Projects like The Story of Stuff Project are great because they inform the public about how we as the human race impact the environment and our own health just by buying new computers or using different cosmetics. Leonard’s videos also give solutions to the problems and gives people everywhere a mantra for action.
