Using body heat to warm French apartments. . .
They say Paris is the “city of love” so it’s fitting that the French have come up with a new way to heat some of the buildings: using body heat. They have devised a way that uses the concepts of geothermal energy to heat the buildings above the subway system. Not only will it cut down on utilities, it will cost less to implement than boiler heaters.
With close to 4.5 million people darting all over Paris per day, scientists have calculated the amount of heat given off by these commuters to be about 100 watts per ride. That heat, stored underground and pushing up, gets taken to heat exchangers and then ultimately to heating pipes leading into the apartments.
The plans are going through the approval process right now and construction is set to begin later this year. If all goes as planned, these buildings will cut their utilities by close to a third.

A small seed, a small leaf, they grow so quickly, but yet so slow. We can make it grow or we can kill it. The fact that this life is so fragile means that we need to take extra care. I only hope I can do my part to help save that tiny life. One way I have tried to help is through my college; I have worked closely with student government and became vice president of student government in hope of creating a greener environment for the students. I have been able to accomplish this slightly, I have started a nature trail clean up day along with my other students, and also I have got recycling for the class rooms of CCAC. By starting this we have been able to see who all is interested in helping clean up our campus and help it to become greener. I hope that we will be able to keep the nature trail clean up day a yearly thing before winter then after. I hope that even when I leave that I have left behind something that will continue to help our school. I hope that I have helped start something that will continue to be an important part of our school. It only takes one time to start a good habit, and to get rid of a bad one. I hope I can continue to make a difference in the world even if it is limited to my own community.
