Protecting the Worlds Greatest Waves

A non-profit organisation recently declared Malibu Surfrider Beach the first ever World Surfing Reserve. This is a huge step in preserving both the shape and cultural significance of the world’s most renowned waves and beaches.
The fate has been sealed for many of California’s premier waves as construction and other projects have taken precedence, Corona Del Mar and Dana Point’s legendary Killer Dana can offer a first hand example of this. Unfortunately this has happened in many places around the world and although the surfing fraternity is quite a passionate bunch, it was always going to be an uphill battle going against multimillion-dollar organizations.
The Save the Waves Coalition selected Malibu has the worlds first surfing reserve over hundreds of entrants from surfing federations worldwide. The decision was made from a panel of surfers, environmentalists and scientists who scored each on quality, consistency, environmental characteristics, the local attitude towards surfing and the sites place in surf culture and history. Malibu was selected largely due to its rich history in the surf culture and due to its high pollution threat from the Malibu Creek.
Unfortunately this recent status Malibu has received offers no real legal standing or protection. More then anything its promoting awareness of the sport and the places that have helped shape it and continue to do so. Down the track we would all like to see official protection from a government organization on certain waves and beaches that fit the bill. Some things are worth more then a dollar, and I think surfers and non surfers alike will see a benefit if this program proceeds.
