Leaving the hustle and bustle of modernity behind, myself and eleven others ventured North to Second Lake; a pristine landscape tucked away within the High Sierra Nevadas. Sure, you see electric cars here and there, but will they ever become as common as SUVs, or on the opposite end of the spectrum, as Priuses? CNN.com reports that electric cars promise zero carbon emissions, running costs of less than one-fourth of that of conventional cars and government incentives like free parking, subsidies and exemption from road tax, yet they aren’t poised to replace conventional vehicles anytime soon. Recycling programs have been largely implemented into society on land throughout our country and now the time has come in incorporate them into air travel as well. A report released in February 2010 by A Green America highlights the lack of recycling programs within airline industries. As of February 2010 no major airlines recycled any of the major recyclables including aluminum cans, glass, paper and plastic and no major airline company had a comprehensive program for minimizing onboard waste, which I find completely ridiculous! Katie’s dreams of feeding the hungry began at age 11, when the third grader turned a donated cabbage seed into a 40-pound vegetable that helped to feed 275 homeless people in her hometown of Summerville, South Carolina. “I knew I wanted to do more to help all of those people who were struggling to eat so I started vegetable gardens,” she said. “I now have 5 gardens and the harvest is donated to people in need in my community. This fall I should be able to donate over a thousand pounds of healthy food to people in need.” Read more…
