Plastics: Fuel for the Future…Maybe
Our World 2.0, a site run through the United Nations University, recently decided to rerun an article concerning a revolutionary device that has the ability to convert plastics back into oil. Introduced by the Blest Company, an engineering firm based out of Japan, this machine’s possibilities are demonstrated in a video featuring its CEO Akinori Ito. As this clip has generated increased attention on popular sites such as Youtube and Wimp.com, it beckons us to reassess our commitment towards sustainability.
Plastic to Oil Fantastic on Youtube
While this product promises to be a viable solution for our recent unfettered production of plastics and the consequential issue concerning their disposal, many viewers have expressed their clear protest with such a claim. Rather than alleviating the problem surrounding plastics, skeptics see it as a dangerous outlet that will only see the continued and proliferated use of them.
Despite the opposition, I see this device as taking a positive step towards a sustainable future. For many third world countries that lack proper recycling centers, the Blest Company offers a way to utilize waste as a potential for future fuel sources.
It’s not that the environmental movement should be content with this innovation, but that we should appreciate it as an idea that stresses a need to fully grasp the potential of our resources, while proactively seeking to minimize the anthropogenic affects we have on the environment.
