Man Made Wetlands for Migratory Birds

Farmers all along the gulf coast are creating man made wetlands in order to help out migratory birds arriving for the fall and winter. Since the oil spill has
tainted these birds usual wintering grounds, extreme measures are being taken to ensure the birds have clean habitats to live in. Farmers are willingly allowing their land to be flooded for the birds sake.
Many people have come together to try to figure out a solution for the migratory birds. Biologist are worried that the birds will arrive in the Gulf area only to find their usual nesting sites covered in oil and their food supply depleted. Although cleanup efforts are great, there is a time constraint since the birds begin to arrive in the fall. This sense of urgency convinced specialists that providing a completely new habitat for these birds was the best option. They realize, that by flooding clean land not affected by the oil with massive amounts of water, they can re create the wetlands that these birds thrive in. The terrific cooperation from the farmers has made the process extremely successful. Fields have been turned into completely new habitats that can provide a home to a wide variety of birds, from those who need only a small amount of moister in the soil to birds that need deep amounts of water to live in. With these efforts, people hope that birds will be lured away from the oil stricken Gulf waters, and choose instead to live in the man made wetlands.
