Chicago to Implement Bike Sharing Program
For years, cities all over Europe have had great success with bike-sharing programs. Finally, this same idea is being implemented in cities such as Denver and Chicago. Entitled Chicago B-Cycle, the program aims to provide residents with daily, weekly, or monthly memberships that enable them to pick up and drop off bikes where they like.
With rental stations placed all over the city, members can run errands, go to lunch, or cruise around town and return it wherever and whenever they want. The bikes come with a lock that is unlocked with the members card.
The bikes are funded by a partnership between bicycle manufacturers and some Chicago area businesses, which means there is no cost to the city. Hopefully, this will decrease the amount of drivers on the road and contribute to a healthier city. The same program was implemented in Denver with 500 bikes which have racked up 18,000 rides since April. As cities become denser, programs like Chicago’s B-Cycle are going to have huge growth.
