World Cup: U.S. Soccer Team to Wear Worlds Most Eco-Friendly Jerseys Ever Created
Need yet another reason to support team USA in its match against England on the 12th of June? Well, now you have it! Team USA’s jerseys are the most environmentally friendly jerseys ever created!
In an effort to promote sustainability Nike has made team USA’s jerseys out of 100% recycled polyester from, believe it or not, discarded plastic water bottles found in landfills in Japan and Taiwan. In creating jerseys for all of the National Teams nearly 13 million plastic water bottles (enough to stretch 1864 miles if laid end to end) were taken from landfills, melted down to create yarn, and spun into USA jerseys! This recycling process not only saved a tremendous amount of natural resources but also reduced overall energy consumption by about 30 percent when compared to jerseys made from virgin materials.
These new recycled jerseys are 13 percent lighter than previous ones. They are designed to draw sweat to the outside of the jersey so that it can rapidly evaporate to keep players dryer. They also have over 200 tiny laser cut holes to increase air circulation so that players remain cooler.
It’s nice to know that these days eco friendly and technologically advanced can go hand in hand. We already know that our environment is better off so now let’s hope that our team is too!
