Governator Supports Termination of Plastic Shopping Bags
On Wednesday, the California state assembly passed legislation banning the use of plastic bags at grocery stores, pharmacies, liquor, and convenience stores throughout the state. Though other countries and even the city of San Francisco have outlawed such bags, this is the nations first statewide ban on the use of plastic bags!
The bill, awaiting approval by the state senate, would go into effect January 1st of 2012. Included within the legislation are plans to require stores to sell reusable bags as well as place fees on the use of paper bags.
Though the tax on paper bags is estimated to be roughly 5 cents per bag, some lawmakers are arguing that California families cannot afford the extra financial burden during these tough economic times. Though opposed by some politicians, the bill is likely to pass in the senate. Even Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger supports the law, calling it “a great victory for our environment.”
One simple way to avoid paying extra fees on each trip to the store would be to purchase a reusable shopping bag. Such bags can be found at several chain super markets for only 99 cents! It seems the best way to prevent pollution from plastic bags is to ban them!

Very good and an Environment friendly step by the government,,we should always use jute or paper bags rather than using a plastic bags,,,plastic bagging dump creates big problems as we are very much aware,,,,
I remember the days when you people wanted everybody to use plastic bags because paper bags showed support for the ruthless murdering of thousands of innocent trees. Now we are encouraged to slay trees and use paper instead of using the plastic bags which get more use than just for groceries. Not only are we not going to be able to use plastic, but we will be forced to pay a tax on paper. Why? I am so glad the government has decided it needs to step in and help me with the decision over what bag I must use while shopping for groceries. Can the state government next tell me when to go to the grocery store, so as to not burn too much fuel?
