It’s a bird, it’s a plane… it’s the most innovative way of harnessing wind energy! An Italian company called KiteGen has recently developed one of the most innovative wind turbines to help reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. As scientists experiment with different methods of channeling energy from renewable resources, such as the sun and the wind, they look everywhere for ideas and influences. This radical new design appeals to a variety of environmental enthusiasts, as well as kite-boarders, windsurfers, and sailors. The KiteGen is able to reach higher altitudes where the wind is more powerful and steady. Therefore, it is capable of producing more energy than our current wind turbines.

The kite can reach an altitude of 800 meters, where the wind speed is typically four times greater than speeds measured at the height of a modern windmill (80 meters). KiteGen also offers other benefits. It costs less than modern turbines to operate and is more aesthetically pleasing. From this basic design, the company has unveiled plans to develop a KiteGen Carousel consisting of several kites rotating a base module, as well as a product that is capable of working from a floating platform in the windiest parts of our oceans. It is innovations like KiteGen that will help us become less dependent on fossil fuels, and more sustainable. Smooth sailing!
